Geoff Meaden: Green Party parliamentary candidate for Canterbury
Until he retired last year Geoff was employed as the Principal Lecturer in Geography at Canterbury Christ Church University, where he also ran a Research Unit that concentrated on the use of computer mapping to help manage world fish stocks. He is now continuing this research work on a part time basis for the United Nations. Geoff has been in the Green Party for more than 30 years and has stood as a candidate in local, county and parliamentary elections.
From the Green perspective his main interests are in transport, land-use policy, conservation and water supply problems. He also takes a very active interest in Climate Change and local planning issues. He is part of a new group who are working throughout Kent to combat some of the very contentious planning issues that are being forced through by the present government, e.g. the plans for 10,200 more houses in the Canterbury District by 2026.
He believes that humankind must entirely alter the way in which they live so that all measures of endeavour and achievement are valued against sustainability rather than economic indicators. Geoff says “Unless this is done there is little hope for the future of our planet”.
